In the world of IT, it is all about the cloud.
Cloud computing offers organizations an important way to reduce costs, increase productivity, and leverage data for decision-making and strategies.

The cloud is big business and offers great opportunities for IT professionals. IDC Information and Data reports there are currently 1.7 million open cloud-related positions globally. If cloud computing continues to grow as expected there could be as many as 7 million cloud-related IT jobs worldwide by 2015.

The challenge for employers and job seekers is the lack of experience needed to work in a cloud-enabled world.

In Demand Skills

What are the cloud skills-sets most in demand? According to CIO Magazine, employers are most in need of IT professionals with:

  • Migration, integration, and developer knowledge of different cloud providers’ application programming interfaces (APIs);
  • Amazon Web Services skills;
  • Open source skills, from Linux to configuration management systems to Ruby;
  • Development Operations engineers.

Cloud Certification

For IT professionals looking to get started with cloud computing, obtaining a certification is a good option. Certifications measure your knowledge and skills against industry- and vendor-specific benchmarks. Candidates and current employees can use certifications to prove to they have the right mix of cloud skills, knowledge, and expertise. Vendor neutral certifications worth a look include:

  • Cloud U: Certifies knowledge of the fundamentals of Cloud Computing.
  • The Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge: Certifies competency in key cloud security areas.
  • CompTIA’s Cloud Essentials Certification: Certifies knowledge of the basic fundamentals of cloud computing, migration to the cloud and governance of cloud computing environments.

Vendors like IBM, Google, Salesforce, Microsoft, VM Ware, and Red Hat also offer certification programs specific to their solutions. The demand for IT professionals with cloud skills will only increase. As a result, organizations need professionals who can work closely with the business to build their cloud expertise. Now is a great time to take a look at your skills and ensure you are ready to succeed in the cloud computing realm.
