The end of the year was accompanied by an influx of excitement around the holidays. Employees were eager for this time to relax and recharge, and companies left feeling hopeful for the quarter ahead. While there was joy in the air, there was also immense pressure to close out current projects, as well as stress to bring in income before December 31 - And, with ever-changing programs and systems, these feelings were amplified for the IT teams across industries. Due to the anxious nature year-end can bring, the IT department’s morale was likely to decrease, taking productivity down with it. Now, after much needed time off, it is time to get back to the office - In hopes to keep spirits high, here are four ways to increase motivation at the start of 2019, entering the New Year with a bang!

Reflect on Success
The biggest way to boost morale is through a simple “Thank You”. It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-do hustle and forget what tasks, small or large, made a project successful. In the world of IT, specialists are constantly keeping up with new software and trends, adding these initiatives on to their normal workload. As leaders in this department, it is important to reflect on these “wins” and remind the team of your gratitude - Take some time at the start of this new year to review last year’s triumphs, inspiring the IT team to reach even further in 2019.

Show Honest Numbers
In order for the IT team to truly see where they have added value to the company over the former 12 months, it is pivotal to show them honest income figures. Additionally, give them a glimpse into where the company financially sits for this upcoming year. Employees appreciate forthright information - It gives them a sense of inclusion, while providing overarching details to help shape their goals for the next fiscal year.

Strategize for the Year to Come
New year, new goals! Every team member benefits from the opportunity to be involved in future planning. It allows them to give their opinion and show their personal worth within the IT division. Each employee has his or her own skill set, so encourage this time for them to bring that specialized knowledge to the table. This meeting can also be used to research new or soon-to-be-released technologies that can be implemented in future projects - Always being in “the know” is crucial for this team, so brainstorm the possibilities together.

Invest in Training
One of the main causes for low morale is the lack of investment. If employees feel like they are simply a number versus an asset, their quality of work and loyalty to the company is guaranteed to decrease. Consider setting aside funds at the beginning of the year to send your IT professionals to various trainings. Gauge your employee’s personal interests and goals, so you can send them to classes or conferences that will be beneficial to both the employee and employer - After all, continued education is a great plus for both parties!
