How to Motivate Yourself When You Don't Have a Deadline

Have a project but not a set deadline for when it needs to be completed? Finding the motivation to work on an assignment can be hard and if you don’t have a deadline you may find yourself procrastinating for days, weeks or months. While projects with a deadline may feel more pressing, if you continually delay the tasks without a deadline they will hang over your head and possibly create anxiety.  Here we give some tips on motivating yourself for such projects.

Give Yourself a Deadline
Even if your boss hasn’t given you a deadline, set one for yourself. Put the deadline on your calendar and create benchmarks for your goal to make sure you stay on track.

Be Around Hard-Working People
Sometimes something as simple as being around high-energy and driven people will give you the boost you need to complete a task.

Minimize Distractions
When you are working on your project for the allocated time you set for yourself keep distractions to a minimum. Put away your phone and do not browse the internet or check messages. Stay focused on the task at hand.

Incentivize Yourself
Motivate yourself with rewards. They don’t need to be anything big. Perhaps once you complete an hour on the project you treat yourself to an iced coffee, or you work for a few hours and then take a short walk outside. The goals will all be individualistic so find something that sounds like a reward for you and stick to it!

Tidy Up
Similar to the point above about distractions, keep your workspace clean and organized. Cluttered workspaces can be distracting so do a quick tidying up before you start your project.

We hope these suggestions are helpful for those with a project but no set deadline. Just remind yourself how good it feels to complete tasks off your to-do list and don’t let the project get pushed aside.
