As many continue to work remotely due to COVID-19, we thought we would tackle the subject on how to manage your teams remotely and keep them motivated during this challenging time.

Set Clear and Defined Expectations
To help employees adapt to working remotely it’s important to set clear and measurable goals. Perhaps this is setting a number of calls or emails they should make or send per week. Whatever is relevant for your team, it’s important to set metrics to help your team stay on track. When adjusting to working from home it can be easy for employees to get distracted so be crystal clear with your team about their duties and overall expectations.

Frequent Check-Ins
Check in with your team throughout the week and schedule one-on-one meetings. While group meetings (especially virtual ones via tools like Zoom) are important, it’s also important to make each team member feel valued with one-on-one attention. Use the individual time with them to discuss what projects they are working on, see if they need help with anything, and also check on their overall well being.

Performance Meeting
Harvard Business Review recently posted an article on how to keep your team motivated and in that article they recommended having a performance cycle meeting at the start of the week. We thought the list of questions they recommended asking was spot on and strongly encourage you connect with your team each Monday and ask them the following:

  1. What impact did we have last week and what did we learn?
  2. What commitments do we have this week? Who is on point for each?
  3. How can we help each other with this week’s commitments?
  4. What are the areas where we should experiment to improve performance this week?
  5. What experiments will we run, and who is on point for each?

Team Building
During these challenging times, it’s important to keep morale high and find ways to connect with your team virtually. There are many creative ways to do this and some ideas include:
Virtual Happy Hour – every Friday, late afternoon have a team happy hour on Zoom
Virtual Weekly Lunches – have your team connect one day a week for a virtual lunch get together
Health Challenge – perhaps there is a member of your team who is a fitness buff and can lead the whole team in a fitness class on Zoom once a week

As many are entering their second month working from home, it’s important to keep your business running and helping your team find the motivation to stay on track. Setting goals and metrics, frequent check-ins, and performance meetings are all great ways to help you accomplish that.
