Technology can help your business do amazing things. In fact, your IT staff is among your organization’s most important assets. As a result, today’s IT leaders must think strategically about how to manage their workforce to retain top talent and ensure the team overall is positioned to deliver - and ready to respond to - emerging IT trends. In other words, you need a talent management strategy.

Talent management is the science of using strategic human resource planning to improve business value and make it possible for organizations to reach their goals. Everything you do to recruit, retain, develop, reward, and push people to perform is part of your talent management strategy. Research done on the value of talent management consistently uncovers benefits in these critical economic areas: revenue, customer satisfaction, quality, productivity, cost, cycle time, and market capitalization. However, most IT leaders have not taken the time to articulate and integrate the various parts of their strategy.

At its core, talent management only takes a few important elements to be successful:

  • A clear understanding of the organization’s current and future business strategies.
  • Identification of the key gaps between the IT talent in place and the talent required to drive business success.
  • A plan designed to close talent gaps, integrated with strategic and business plans.
  • Accurate hiring and promotion decisions.
  • Connection of individual and the IT team’s goals to corporate goals, and providing clear expectations and feedback to manage performance.
  • Development of talent to enhance performance in current positions as well as readiness for transition to the next level.
  • Business impact and workforce effectiveness measurement.

IT leaders who implement talent management strategies are more prepared than their competitors to compete in the global economy and capitalize quickly on new opportunities. So, make one of your 2015 resolutions developing a talent management strategy.
