Amidst COVID-19, many in the business world had to adapt to working from home and there is no question that technology had a huge role to play in allowing those to do their work remotely. While some have been slowly transitioning to returning back to their physical workplace, there are others who plan on working remotely indefinitely. Companies like Twitter have led the way in making it known that some of their employees can continue to work from home permanently and it appears other companies are following their lead. There is no doubt COVID-19 will have long lasting effects, one of which is how we view technology and the immense role it will play in our work and home lives moving forward. In our blog we will look at the top technology trends that are playing a crucial role during COVID-19 and will have a long-lasting impact after the pandemic.

Remote Work and Schools
We have spoken a lot about working remotely, but we should also mention that  there are several technologies that make it possible to successfully work from home, some of those include virtual private networks (VPNs), voice over internet protocols (VoIPs), virtual meetings (such as Zoom), and work collaboration tools (like Slack). While remote work these past couple of months has helped slow the spread of COVID-19, many also enjoy the flexibility it offers them. Those who have been quarantined with their families have also seen first-hand technology’s role in their children’s virtual learning.

Online Shopping and Drones
While online shopping was already a huge trend before COVID-19, there became a sense of urgency once the pandemic hit. In China, drones have been used to deliver medical supplies to hospitals and clinics as well as food and supplies to those confined to their homes. The US appears to not be far behind with those methods. Companies such as Amazon, UPS, and Walmart have been testing with drones and in the not too distant future we can expect some of our deliveries to be from drones too.

Telemedicine
Much like remote work and school, virtual healthcare has been on the rise since the pandemic. Telehealth makes it possible for those at home, both who cannot or will not go in to a physical office,  to consult with doctors on everything from routine health checkups, medication consultations, dermatology, eye exams, and mental health counseling.  Because of the option for telemedicine during the pandemic restrictions, it is now much easier for those to get treatment and fill their prescriptions either on the phone or through video conferencing.

While there will be other technology trends such as 3D printing and augmented and virtual reality that will experience a growth opportunity in part due to the pandemic, the ones listed above will have the biggest impact in most individual’s current and future lives.
