It seems every time you read an industry post, or attend a conference, people are talking about new and emerging technology. While it is exciting to hear about what’s “new” and “cool”, I always wonder: How much of what is hot in technology is garnering investment by businesses today and driving the talent demands of tomorrow?

And, I’m not alone in my curiosity. The team at PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC, recent surveyed technology leaders to ask where they are making investments. The results, while not exciting, reinforce the need for organizations to focus on their infrastructure. The top three areas for investment include:

  • Cyber security (69%)
  • Cloud migration (61%)
  • Data mining and analysis (54%)

Businesses are using technology investments in these areas to support core business functions including finance, operations, and marketing. While business leaders are interested in emerging technology and trends, they also realize the benefits of ongoing investment in technology which supports essential business functions can deliver powerful benefits including:

  • Reduced costs of operations
  • New product and new market creation
  • Adaptation to changes in scale and format
  • Improved customer service
  • Reorganized administrative operations

So, while businesses are looking for technology professionals who are constant learners and are familiar with new technologies, their demand for candidates well versed in legacy programs remains strong. The following are language for which we see constant demand:

  • C
  • C++
  • C#
  • Java
  • Visual Basic

This means that technology professionals are faced with the dual challenge of keeping up-to-date on the emerging technologies which could enhance business performance, while working hard to maintain their core programming skills and knowledge.

I like to keep myself updated with latest technologies. This will be difficult for those who work in other professions. But I found a online course to make my passion as my profession. You can also try the collegemonk.
