The Internet of Things – A phrase that has become increasingly popular over the last few years and a topic of discussion found in both business and social circles. But, what is it exactly?

In the broadest sense, IoT literally means as it sounds – It is everything in today’s world that is connected to the Internet. However, in many cases, it is sparking conversation around any technology that wouldn’t normally be expected to have internet connection, and can independently communicate with that network without any human interaction. Smartphones, wearables and light bulbs operated by an app are prime examples of the devices that make up the Internet of Things, and list is only growing. Homes are already becoming fully equipped with these items, making the future very bright for the IoT – How with this continue evolving over the coming years?

Future for IoT
It has been found that the numbers associated with the Internet of Things has already exceeded our human population – The crazy thing? This statistic happened in 2008. As of today, only a very small percentage of companies are leveraging IoT to their full potential, but that is projected to change drastically. Due to its use and popularity, by 2025, the estimated number of devices associated with IoT is expected to reach more than 21 billion.

Along with this boom around the Internet of Things in the consumer space, businesses and cities have also begun inserting themselves into the conversation. While people are utilizing these devices at home and on the go, organizations are looking into how they can adopt this smart technology to map out efficiencies in both time and money. Soon enough, IoT will be seen on the street as ways to automate and collect data through video surveillance systems, taxis, and more.

Last but not least, safety is an important part of IoT – Smart home appliances, such as thermostats, alarm systems and even coffee makers are constantly collecting information on our habits as users. We’ve seen this predominately in home voice services like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home – These machine-learning devices are actually learning without the need to be programed. This is a huge advancement in Artificial Intelligence, but is also an area that is need of stronger and smarter security. While many of these individual devices cannot be protected, the routers in which provide the connection can. We will see a boost in the safety realm as technology continues to advance.
