Icebreaker Questions to Introduce New Employees to the Team

When introducing a new employee to the team, you’ll want to create a relaxed and conversational environment to help the new employee feel comfortable. A great way to do that is to ask your team questions to help break the ice, get to know each other better, and create a warm and friendly environment for the new team member. Having a variety of questions, some purely business-related, some a little more personal, and ones just for fun, will provide a good mix. Depending how frequently you have a new employee, and the tenure of the current employees, you’ll want to switch around the questions, so your team doesn’t have to continually answer the same questions each time you have a new hire. Keep things interesting and fun so even the employees that have worked for you for years can get to know each other better. Here are some ideas to help you get started; having around 4-5 questions total (with 1-2 questions from each category) should be a good amount.

Work related questions

  • For your established employees, what is their role is and how long they’ve been with the company
  • Best piece of professional advice they’ve received
  • What have their past roles been
  • What motivates them to work hard
  • If all salaries were the same, what would be their ideal job

Questions that are little more personal

  • If your team works remotely, ask where they are located
  • Do they have any pets
  • Three words that describe themselves
  • If they are a morning person or a night person and if that influences how they go about their day
  • If they had an extra hour in their day, how would they spend it

Just for fun questions

  • Two truths and a lie (stating two truths and one lie about themselves and having the team guess which is the lie)
  • Fun fact about themselves
  • Favorite place they’ve visited
  • If they could only eat 1 meal the rest of their life, what would it be
  • If they could live anywhere, where would it be
  • Current favorite show or movie
